Eagle Rock: Old Homes on the Edge of the Hills
Eagle Rock sits against the San Rafael Hills, and that edge between neighborhood and hillside shapes most tree service work there. Lower streets have big, older yard trees over Craftsman and revival-style homes. Upper streets add slopes, retaining walls and native brush. Both need a plan that fits the lot.
Some of the oldest housing in our area
About 43% of Eagle Rock's roughly 10,300 homes were built before 1940, and the median year built is 1947. Eagle Rock was its own city from 1911 until Los Angeles annexed it in 1923, and many historic homes are Craftsman, along with Georgian, Streamline Moderne, Art Deco and Mission Revival styles. Trees planted in that period are now large, and many have old topping cuts, cabling or decay that deserve a closer look.
Arborist consultation first
For a big old tree near a house, an inspection is often the best first step. We look at the root flare, trunk, major unions and old pruning wounds, then tell you whether the tree needs light pruning, weight reduction or removal. That makes it easier to plan and budget, and it avoids cutting more than the tree needs.
Hillside lots
Above the flats, lots climb into the San Rafael Hills. On steep yards we rig and lower wood, keep debris from rolling into walls and stairs, and leave stumps in place when their roots help hold a bank. Eagle Rock Hillside Park and the rock itself, Historic-Cultural Monument No. 10, show how close the hills are to people's back fences.
City of LA rules
Eagle Rock is part of the City of Los Angeles. Native oaks, Southern California black walnut, Western sycamore and California bay are protected at 4 inches of cumulative diameter under LAMC 46.00 through 46.06, and removing one needs a permit from the Urban Forestry Division. Street trees require a permit before trimming, removal or root pruning. Hillside natives are more common here than in the flats, so we check species before quoting.
Palms and stumps
Tall palms along Eagle Rock streets and yards shed heavy fronds and seed stalks. We clean them without spiking the trunk. After any removal, stump grinding is listed as its own line so you can decide.
Thinking about fire and brush
Upper Eagle Rock lots that back onto the San Rafael Hills sit close to wildland vegetation. Keeping dead limbs, dry palm fronds and dense brush away from the house, roof and deck reduces what can catch embers. We can remove dead material, raise low limbs that connect ground brush to the canopy, and clear branches that overhang the roof. Your local fire department sets the actual brush clearance rules, so check with them for your property.
Stumps on uneven ground
Grinding a stump on a slope or next to a stone wall takes care. We check for irrigation, buried lines and wall footings first, and we stop short of anything that could undermine a wall. Where a grinder cannot reach, a flush cut and a layer of mulch is often the practical answer.

Eagle Rock Questions
Is the oak on my Eagle Rock hillside protected?
Native oaks other than scrub oak are protected in the City of Los Angeles once they reach 4 inches in cumulative diameter at 4.5 feet. Removal requires an Urban Forestry Division permit.
My old tree has cables in it. Is that a problem?
Cables can help a tree with weak unions, but old hardware should be inspected. An arborist consultation will check the cables and the unions they support.
Do you spike palms to climb them?
Not for routine trimming. Spikes leave wounds in the trunk that never heal.
