Temple City Remembers the 2011 Wind

Temple City took one of the hardest hits in the San Gabriel Valley during the December 2011 windstorm. Up to 200 trees toppled in the city, about 30 homes were damaged and roughly 75% of the city lost power. That storm is the best argument we know for regular tree service in Temple City: the trees that fail in wind are mostly the ones carrying deadwood, decay or too much weight at the ends.

Trimming that helps in wind

Wind-ready trimming is not the same as cutting a tree back hard. Topping a tree leaves a mass of weakly attached sprouts that can break in the next storm. Instead, we:

  • Remove dead, broken and hanging limbs
  • Thin crowded interior branches so wind can pass through
  • Shorten long limbs that reach over the roof or the driveway
  • Raise low limbs for clearance over walks and cars
  • Check old pruning wounds and the trunk base for decay

The houses and their trees

The median Temple City home was built in 1959, and close to 30% of the city's housing dates to the 1950s, part of the post-war boom that led to incorporation in 1960. Many of those lots still have the original shade trees. Seventy-year-old trees can be beautiful, but they often have hidden decay at old cuts or roots damaged by later remodels and driveway work.

Home of Camellias

Temple City's motto is Home Of Camellias, and many yards still have camellias and other ornamental shrubs under the big trees. When we drop limbs or move equipment, we protect those plantings, lower wood instead of letting it fall into beds, and keep chipper traffic on the hardscape.

After a storm

If a tree or limb is on the house, a car or the fence, call (626) 594-4788. Stay clear of any downed wires and call the utility first. We start with what is dangerous, then clear access, then finish the cleanup and quote any stump grinding separately.

Permits and city trees

Temple City's Building and Safety Division handles encroachment permits for work in the public right-of-way, and street trees are managed by the city. Before removing a large tree, check with the city whether it is protected. We can tell you the species and trunk size so you can ask the right question.

What an estimate from us includes

Each tree gets its own line: what we will cut, roughly how much of the crown comes off, how the wood is lowered and whether we haul or leave it. Stump grinding and any palm cleanup are listed separately so you can pick and choose. If a tree looks like it could need a city sign-off, we say so in writing rather than leaving you to find out later. For the large shade trees common on Temple City's post-war lots, we often recommend splitting the job: urgent deadwood and roof clearance now, and structural thinning in a cooler month.

Temple City Questions

Is topping my tree a good way to protect it from wind?

No. Topping causes weakly attached regrowth that breaks easily. Thinning, deadwood removal and end-weight reduction do more to protect the tree and the house.

How often should big shade trees be trimmed?

It depends on the species and growth, but large trees near a house usually benefit from an inspection every few years, plus a look after any major wind event.

Will you protect my camellias?

Yes. We lower wood into open areas, use ground protection where needed and keep equipment off planting beds.
