Getting Rid of the Stump for Good
Stump grinding is the usual way to deal with a stump in a Monterey Park yard. A grinder with a spinning toothed wheel chews the stump into chips, a few inches at a time, until it sits below the soil surface. It is faster and far less disruptive than digging a stump out, and it does not leave the big crater an excavator would.
Why not just leave it?
Some owners keep a stump as a planter base or simply ignore it. Others want it gone because it trips people, blocks a mower, stands where a new tree, patio or ADU will go, or keeps sending up sprouts. Some species resprout vigorously from the stump and roots, and decaying stumps can draw termites and fungi. Grinding solves most of those issues in a single visit.
How deep and how wide
A standard grind takes the stump several inches below grade, which is enough for lawn or groundcover. For a new tree in the same spot, or for paving or a slab, deeper grinding and wider removal of surface roots may be needed. Tell us what is going in that spot, and the quote will match it.
Before the grinder starts
Underground lines are the main hazard. We ask about gas, water and electric lines before grinding and contact 811 to have buried utilities marked when a stump sits near them. Sprinkler lines and low-voltage lighting wires around stumps are common; mark what you know of, and we will work around them carefully. Rocks and buried concrete dull and break grinder teeth, so we probe around the stump first.
Gates, slopes and backyards
Many Monterey Park backyards are reached only through a narrow side gate or down a set of steps. Compact grinders fit through tight openings, and on slopes we plan where the machine can sit level and safe. Access is often the biggest price factor for a backyard stump.
What happens to the chips
A ground stump leaves a pile of wood chips mixed with soil, usually more than people expect. You can have them:
- Raked back into the hole and mounded so they settle level over time
- Spread as mulch around beds, though fresh chips are better aged before use against plants
- Hauled away with the hole backfilled with topsoil, ready for sod or seed
Palm stumps
Palm stumps behave differently from other trees. Palms have a dense mass of fibrous roots instead of big woody ones, and a palm stump grinds into stringy fiber. It does not resprout. Grinding palm stumps is often quicker than grinding a hardwood stump of the same width.
Settling and replanting
Roots left in the ground decay over the next few years, and the soil above them can sink. Top up low spots as they appear. If you plant a new tree, offset it a little from the old stump center and use fresh soil rather than pure chips in the planting hole.
Stump Grinding Options
Your quote lists the stumps and the add-ons you choose.
Standard grind
Stump ground several inches below grade, chips left in place.
Deep grind for replanting
Extra depth and width where a new tree or slab will go.
Surface root grinding
Visible roots running across lawns and beds ground out.
Chip removal and backfill
Chips hauled off and the hole filled with topsoil.
Multiple stumps
Additional stumps on the same visit priced lower than the first.

How Stump Grinding Works
1. Measure and mark
We measure each stump, ask about sprinkler and lighting lines, and plan machine access.
2. Clear around it
Rocks and debris are cleared and the stump is cut low with a saw.
3. Grind
The wheel works across the stump until it is below grade to the agreed depth.
4. Finish
Chips are raked back, spread or hauled, and the area is cleaned up.

Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost?
HomeGuide's national figures put the first stump at $120 to $400 and each extra stump at $30 to $60. Pricing is often based on diameter, at about $2 to $6 per inch.
Does stump grinding remove the roots?
No. Grinding removes the stump and the top of the root flare. Larger roots stay in the ground and decay slowly. Surface roots that run across a lawn can be ground out as an add-on.
Can a stump grinder fit through my side gate?
Compact grinders fit through many standard gates. Measure the narrowest point on the way to the stump and tell us when you call.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Yes, after a deeper grind and replacing the chips with soil. Planting slightly off the old center helps avoid the densest decaying wood.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Most stumps ground below grade will not resprout. Some vigorous species can send up shoots from leftover roots for a while; cutting those back repeatedly exhausts them.
