Cleaning Up Palms the Right Way
Palm tree trimming in Monterey Park mostly means one tree: the Mexican fan palm, the tall, skinny palm that towers over so many 1950s yards in the San Gabriel Valley. Left alone, it builds a thick skirt of dead brown fronds under the green head. That skirt sheds in wind, hides rats and pigeons, and can catch fire. A clean trim removes the dead material and leaves the living crown in place.
What a proper palm trim removes
- Dead and fully brown fronds
- Hanging, broken or split fronds
- Flower stalks and seed clusters, which drop seeds and stain paving
- Old frond bases (boots) that are loose, if you want a cleaner trunk
What it leaves alone: healthy green fronds. Palms make food in those leaves, and HomeGuide's palm guide warns that cutting too many green fronds weakens the tree and slows growth. The over-trimmed look, with only a small tuft of fronds pointing straight up, harms the palm.
How often
HomeGuide's palm guide suggests trimming once or twice a year depending on the species, climate and how long since the last trim. Frequent trimming does not speed growth. In Monterey Park, a trim before fall wind season clears the fronds most likely to blow off in a Santa Ana event, and summer works for seed pods before they drop.
Tall palm access
Many fan palms here rise well above the roofline and stand right next to houses, garages and wires. Where a lift can reach, that is our first choice. Where it cannot, the palm is climbed with appropriate gear. We do not use climbing spikes on healthy palms we are only trimming, because spike wounds on a palm trunk do not heal.
Other palms in town
- Queen palms: softer fronds and heavy, messy fruit clusters; they usually need more frequent cleanup.
- Canary Island date palms: thick trunks and long, sharp spines on the frond bases; slow, careful work.
- Mediterranean fan palms and smaller ornamentals: short enough for ladders in many cases, still worth keeping free of dead fronds.
Skinning a trunk
Some owners like the smooth look of a skinned fan palm, with old frond bases cut off the trunk. It can be done, but it is extra work, and cutting too deep into the trunk causes damage. We price it as an option, separate from the regular cleanup.
Palms and power lines
A palm crown that has grown into or over power lines is a utility matter. Fronds near energized lines can conduct electricity, and they are a known source of outages in wind. We trim palms that are clear of lines, and for those that are not, we tell you to call the utility so its line-clearance crews can handle the dangerous part first.
When a palm should come out
A palm with a pinched or narrowed trunk, a dead or collapsing center bud, or a heavy lean toward the house may be at the end of its life. Because palms grow from a single bud at the top, a palm whose bud dies will not recover. If we see that, we will tell you and quote removal alongside trimming.

How Palm Trimming Works
1. Count and measure
We note each palm, its height, species and how much dead material it carries.
2. Check access and wires
We decide lift or climb and confirm the crown is clear of power lines.
3. Trim
Dead fronds, stalks and pods come off; healthy green fronds stay.
4. Clean up
Fronds and debris are bundled or chipped and hauled away.

Palm Tree Trimming Questions
How much does it cost to trim a tall palm tree?
HomeGuide's national figures run $150 to $900 for palms 30 to 60 feet and $250 to $1,100 for 60 to 80 feet. A palm that has not been trimmed in years costs more because of the heavy skirt.
Should I cut off the green fronds too?
No. Green fronds feed the palm. Removing them weakens the tree and can slow its growth. A clean trim takes only dead and dying fronds plus flower and seed stalks.
Why do you not use spikes to climb palms?
Spike holes in a palm trunk are permanent, since palms do not grow new tissue to close wounds the way other trees do. On a palm we are only trimming, we use a lift or climbing methods that do not puncture the trunk.
Are dead palm fronds a fire risk?
Dry fronds burn readily, and a thick skirt of them is easy to ignite and can throw embers in wind. Keeping palms clean is a sensible step in a region with dry Santa Ana winds.
Can you trim a palm that is touching power lines?
Not the part near the lines. Call the electric utility first; its line-clearance crews handle vegetation near energized lines. We can trim the rest once that is done.
