Taking Down Trees Without Damaging What Surrounds Them

Tree removal in Monterey Park rarely means felling a whole tree in one cut. Most yards are too small, and the tree usually leans over a roof, a block wall, a neighbor's garage or wires. So most removals here are sectional: limbs are cut and lowered on ropes, the trunk comes down in short pieces, and the brush goes through the chipper as the work goes on.

Reasons people remove a tree

  • It is dead or dying. Dead trees get brittle quickly in a dry climate and drop limbs without warning.
  • It is leaning or cracked. A new lean, soil heaving on one side, or a split between two trunks are signs the tree may fail.
  • It is the wrong tree for the spot. Ficus and other big-rooted trees planted beside foundations, walks and sewer lines can do expensive damage.
  • It was damaged in a storm. A tree that lost half its crown in a Santa Ana event may never be stable again.
  • It is in the way. Additions, ADUs, pools and solar panels sometimes need a tree out of the way.

Is it really a removal?

Many trees people want gone only need deadwood taken out, a heavy limb shortened or the canopy thinned. If pruning will solve the problem, we say so and price both options. When a tree has major decay in the trunk or root flare, a large split, or a shot hole borer attack spreading through the main stems, removal is usually the honest answer.

Parkway trees and permits

If the tree stands between the sidewalk and the curb, it belongs to the City. Monterey Park Municipal Code section 9.63.030 makes it unlawful to remove a tree in a public street without a permit. Section 9.63.060 lets the neighboring owner apply in writing to the recreation and parks director, giving reasons such as the tree being a nuisance or not the species designated for that street. The director can require a replacement tree, backed by a deposit that is refunded when the permit conditions are met. We do not cut public trees without that permission. These permit sections cover trees in public parks and streets. For a tree in a private yard, confirm with the City's Planning Division before removal, and check any HOA rules or conditions tied to your property.

Removing tall palms

Mexican fan palms are among the tallest trees in town, and removal is usually done from the top down: fronds first, then the trunk in rounds. Where a lift can reach, it is faster and safer; on slopes or behind houses, it may mean climbing. The trunk is fibrous and heavy, so haul-away is a real line item. Palm stumps can be ground like any other.

Hillside and backyard removals

On sloped lots and in backyards reached only through a side gate, every piece of wood has to be carried, lowered or chipped near the tree. That is the biggest swing factor in removal pricing here. We check gate widths, steps, walls and the path to the street before quoting, and note anything that has to be protected with plywood or mats.

Infested and diseased wood

When a tree shows signs of invasive shot hole borer, the wood should not become firewood for the neighborhood. We chip the brush and haul the logs instead of leaving rounds stacked in the yard, which helps keep beetles from moving to healthy trees nearby.

After the tree is down

You choose what happens to the stump: leave it, cut it flush, or grind it below grade so the spot can be replanted or paved. If you want a replacement tree, we can suggest species that fit the space better than what was there.

What a Removal Quote Covers

Each removal quote lists these parts so you can see where the cost comes from.

Rigging and sectional cutting

Lowering limbs and trunk sections on ropes where there is no room to drop the tree.

Lift or climbing access

A lift where it can reach, climbing where slopes or yards block equipment.

Protection of the property

Plywood, mats or padding over lawns, pavers, roofs and walls in the work zone.

Chipping and haul-away

Brush chipped on site and wood hauled, unless you ask to keep firewood from a healthy tree.

Stump options

Left at a set height, cut flush, or ground below grade, priced separately.

Permit coordination

Confirming whether the tree is public, and waiting for the City's permit when it is.

How a Removal Goes

1. Look and plan

We check the tree, its lean, the targets under it, wires and the route for the wood, and confirm it is not a City tree.

2. Written estimate

You get the price for the removal, cleanup and any stump work on separate lines.

3. Set up and protect

On the day, the work zone is marked off and anything fragile is covered or moved.

4. Take it down

Limbs and trunk sections are cut and lowered, and brush is chipped as we go.

5. Clean up

Wood is hauled, the area is raked and blown, and the stump is handled the way you chose.

Tree Removal Questions

How much does it cost to remove a large tree?

HomeGuide lists $850 to $2,000 for trees 60 to 80 feet tall and $1,200 to $2,500 or more above 80 feet, nationally. Sectional rigging over a house, slope access and haul-away from a backyard can raise the figure.

Can I remove the tree in my parkway?

Not on your own. Trees in public streets are City trees under section 9.63.030 of the Municipal Code. You can apply in writing to the recreation and parks director for a removal permit under section 9.63.060, and the City may require a replacement tree.

Is stump grinding included in tree removal?

Not automatically. HomeGuide notes that stump removal usually adds $100 to $500 or more per stump. We price it as a separate line so you can decide.

Can a tree be removed if there is no room for a truck?

Yes. Wood is cut small enough to carry or chip near the tree, and gates, steps and slopes are planned for at the estimate. It takes longer, which shows up in the price.

Will my homeowner's insurance pay for tree removal?

That depends on your policy and on whether the tree damaged a covered structure. Healthy trees removed by choice are generally not covered. Call your insurer before work starts if a tree has hit the house, garage or fence.
